today was a mixed day! I had some really nice moments with the dreaded ninth graders who are not actually so dreadful anymore. We ate lunch together (for the first time!) and it was nice. I soloed a class with them (!!!) and it was nice!

But then I missed a kind of important teachable moment with a seventh grader about not being a little brat and laughing at the efforts of others. It’s really hard to know what to say because my role in discipline here is really vague and I have to read between the lines a lot, I’m sort of allowed + expected to tell them off for little things/things concerning me but I can’t do the big ol’ sit down and I didn’t know where this stood

let’s call today a 65% win for helping socialize children and trying to communicate peace and love. let’s put on our favorite skirt n watch some movies with some pals

What are studios looking for? How can I get into a good animation school? What should I be studying?

I get a lot of these types of questions now and again, and I never know how to answer them. I can’t be sure of what studios are looking for, I don’t control admissions policies to schools, and I have little idea what makes for a current and relevant curriculum. There are a lot of variables in your bid for a career in animation, and it’s kind of impossible to control most of them. You must be crazy to want this job!

I find it helpful to focus on the things I can control. Among those things are your study habits and how you spend your personal time. It’s good to work hard and have goals—without them we would get nowhere. Study hard and make decisive strides towards achieving your art goals. But in the heat of that pursuit, don’t forget to go out and live your life!

If you spend any amount of time looking at artists online, you’ve probably figured out by now that there are about a million dudes and dudettes in internetville who draw better than you (I relive this realization daily). Once your have done your best to rise to their level, the only tool you have to compete with these crazy talents is your background, your personal character—is you!

Consider developing your whole self with the same raw focus and intensity that you develop a particular skill set. Get focused. Go out, have adventures. Run, jump, skin your knee, fall in love, root loudly for the away team at a baseball game, barely escape a crash of stampeding rhinos, live to see another day. Experience things big and small. Go for a walk. The world is full of wonders.

I know this advice is not particularly animation-specific, but maybe that’s for the best. At any rate, it is something I feel strongly about. Animation is great, and there are few things that I enjoy doing more than drawing and storytelling. But in order to have stories to tell, first you have to live them.

PS, if you were looking for advice on draftsmanship you should probably be reading this.

This is great. Especially with the currently huge cost of college that kids out of high school can’t really comprehend the consequences of, I say take a few years to grow up and experience the real world before you bet your entire financial future on a school. Get your own place, or just bum around the country, or join the peace corps. There are limitless possibilities out of high school that become impossibilities when you have 100k student loan debt. Rack up a 5k credit card having fun before college and as you struggle to pay it back you’ll probably realize a cheaper college would be a better idea.

A good life reminder in general! Man I get stressed about getting my career in time, but maybe I don’t have to quite so much…

City life in Japan is cool! You can get stuck in a bubble compared to the country though I find… I liked living in a medium sized city (Kanazawa) best. Best of both worlds :) sendai is really big which can make it too easy to pretend you aren’t in Japan… If that makes sense!

I had to think a lot!
My life is basically the same as in Australia most of the time.
Catch the bus, go to work, hang out with coworkers, hang out with adorable kids, go grocery shopping, go running/karate, hang out in my apartment. I speak/read Japanese fairly ok though, so I think that changes my experiences a lot! For my friends who have little or no Japanese some things are better, some worse.

other things that came up when I thought about this….

good: food, travel, cost of living, safety, books, cultural exchange, clothes, wonderful experiences, quiet, group mentality, differences between east and west Japan, dialects, Japanese commercials, weather (rain is exciting to Australians)

bad: social restrictions, racism, food (allergies/vegetarianism), cost of living (if you’re from the states), clothes, negotiating culture shock (which is a given no matter how much Japanese you know/living experience you have), smoking, group mentality, work culture, gender roles

Overall I really love living in Japan! Right now I’m in a strange and comfortable place with adjusting to life here. I love my family but if not for the legal difficulties of migrating here I would probably seriously think about buying a house in west Japan,

So I think it’s kind of hard for me to answer this objectively without writing an essay about Japanese society lol. If you’re interested in any of the points I raised let me know and I’ll elaborate! Since you’re already planning to live there i guess you know most basic things, I didn’t want to bore you c:

American Mangaka will be up at the Amakusa Cultural Exchange Center from June 1-8, with an opening on June 1st from 12-5pm.

The ten artists exhibiting are: Ryan Andrews, Kevin Czapiewski, Adrien Dacquel, Sean Dove, Matt Forsythe, Joseph Lambert, Jen Lee, Sloane Leong, Kris Mukai, and Jon Wolfe.

I’ll have some prints and comic pages in this show! Check it out if you are in this area~
